Event description

A program to celebrate the 150th birthday of composer, pianist and conductor Sergei Rachmaninov (1873-1943). One of the greatest and most unique musical minds of the the Twentieth Century, Rachmaninov left Russia in 1917 following the revolution and lived in Finland, Switzerland and the US where he died in 1943. His music remains a monument to late romanticism and its capacity to forge new musical possibilities as alternatives to modernism.

Brilliant young pianist Ching Pong Ng (watch this talented musician here) has curated a series of birthday concerts of Rachmaninov's music at the Sydney Conservatorium in 2023 and will present a program of solo piano works and songs with the rising star soprano Galatea Kneath. 

Their program includes

Sergei Rachmaninov (1873- 1943)

Preludes (selection); Morceaux de Salon op 10 (selection); Variations on a theme by Chopin op. 22
Selections from Etude Tableaux op 33 and op 39, Two Romances op 38 and the Sonata Vocalise in C major by Nikolai Medtner.

The performance at 2 pm will be introduced at 1 pm in a pre-concert talk. Goetz Richter and Ching Pong Ng in Conversation: Rachmaninov's importance as a pianist and composer.

Attendance at the pre-concert talk is free with a concert ticket. All profits from the concert benefit the Kendall National Violin Competition.
