A thriving grassroots sport sector is pivotal to delivering social, health and economic benefits to the Australian community.

The ASF has identified a potential solution that could unlock more than a hundred million dollars a year in new funding for amateur sports; providing much-needed resources to support grassroots initiatives, improve facilities, and run development programs across the nation. Modelling shows that this has the potential to increase participation numbers by 190,000 new participants by 2028.

By amending the Charities Act 2013, and achieving charitable status for amateur sport and athletes, we could unlock over $103 million in philanthropic funding a year for the sector by 2030.

Please find here a discussion paper with more information about this proposed change.

However, charitable status would have practical implications for affected clubs and these implications need to be fully considered before progressing with such a change.

To assess the best way forward, we need to engage with Australia’s amateur sports clubs and seek their input and feedback – and to do this effectively we will need your help as key stakeholders, custodians and influencers of the sporting ecosystem. Register for more details.
