Event description

ABOUT KIMBERLEY HANSON

“I have a gift for telling stories, making them seem larger than life,” - Nancy Wilson, 1993.

A natural storyteller, Kimberley Hanson is a Brisbane-based jazz and blues vocalist with a deep love for improvisation.

Since graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance from the Jazz Music Institute, Kimberley has made a career for herself as an in-demand vocalist and experienced artist.

Most recently, Kimberley has performed at prestigious events and venues including Brisbane Festival, Moreton Bay Food & Wine Festival, QPAC Green, and Doo-Bop Jazz Bar.

Outside of her jazz roots, Kimberley fronts multiple original projects including alt-jazz quartet KRUNJ and doom-ska orchestra Boss Moxi. She has contributed vocals to crossover projects and stage shows including The Pink Floyd Experience and Moulin Rouge Spectacular Spectacular.

For her upcoming showcase, Kimberley turns her artistry toward the time-honoured songbook of seminal jazz chanteuse Nancy Wilson. Wilson—who recorded 70 albums and won three Grammy Awards for her work—is a major influence on both Kimberley and artists around the world.

“She’s my jazz mother,” says Hanson. “I listen to Nancy and I feel like she’s telling me a story. She’s taught me so much about singing just by listening to her on record. I’m really excited to showcase a paired-back version of her repertoire while retaining the big band spirit of her iconic arrangements.”

“I hope to take you on a journey, the same way Nancy did.”

To help celebrate the queen who bridged jazz and pop, Kimberley Hanson will be joined by Brad Esbensen (trumpet/arrangements), Noel Stephensen (trombone), Jan Hewerdine (saxophone), Benjamin Van Jole (piano), Nick Quigley (bass), and Gary Eldershaw (drums).
