KIN Homeschool - Crawley Term 1
Event description
KIN Homeschool is a space where children experiment, create, and play. Each session is guided by passionate Nature Playworkers, who create the conditions for deep exploration, open-ended play, and hands-on skill building.
During Term 1, our theme “Rafts” invites participants to design, build, and launch their own floating creations on the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River). What begins as a simple idea grows into a rich journey of scientific inquiry, teamwork, and connection with nature.
Children explore forces and buoyancy (Science - Physical Sciences, Science Inquiry Skills), experimenting with different materials to see what floats and why. Through trial, observation, and reflection, they uncover how weight, shape, and balance affect stability on water, learning the principles of physics through play and real-world experience.
As they work with pallets, ropes, and pipes, children practice design thinking and engineering processes (Design and Technologies - Investigating, Producing, Evaluating). They refine knots, test solutions, and collaborate to make each raft stronger and safer, demonstrating creativity, perseverance, and problem-solving.
Each session also supports Health and Physical Education outcomes, as children develop coordination, strength, and water safety awareness. Playworkers support children to take safe, self-directed risks, encouraging confidence, resilience, and awareness of personal limits, key elements of Personal, Social and Community Health.
Language and storytelling flow naturally through the sessions, aligning with English - Literacy and Language. Children describe their designs, share discoveries, and reflect on challenges, giving voice to their learning.
Underpinning the experience is the philosophy of Playwork, where play is understood as the child’s natural way of learning. Adults act as facilitators rather than directors, creating a safe and rich environment where curiosity leads. Children make real decisions, negotiate, take risks, and collaborate, all within a framework that honours the play process itself.
Guided by Deep Nature Connection principles, the program nurtures relationship with the more-than-human world. Water, wind, wood, and rope become teachers. The rhythm of the river invites stillness, awareness, and gratitude, helping children feel a deep sense of belonging and care for Country.
Please note, children must have turned 6 to attend KIN Homeschool. KIN Homeschool is a drop and leave program. Contact us if you have any questions about your child's ability to participate.
