King Island Bird Walk
Event description
Come shorebird spotting with us on the sandbar walk to King Island during low-tide! This event is free and open to LGBTQIA+ folks and allies of all experience levels.
About the Walk:
Wellington Point Recreation Reserve is located at the end of Main Road, Wellington Point. Low tide reveals a glistening sandbar that you can walk across (2km return) to reach a small mangrove-clad island. The marine life exposed creates the perfect feeding opportunity for migratory shorebirds. Expect to see waders, gulls, terns and some water birds. Spot Mangrove Honeyeaters on King Island, and birds of prey such as Brahminy Kites and Osprey.
📍Find Us:
Parking is available along the Reserve Esplanade, however carpooling is encouraged where possible (especially as it's a Public Holiday). Meet at 1-6 Main Rd, Wellington Point QLD 4160.
Safety & Accessibility:
Please wear adequate sun protection for this walk! King Island can only be accessed on foot during low tide. The sandbar walk can be a bit sharp on the feet with rocks and broken shells. Reef shoes or waterproof sandals are highly recommended. We have factored enough time to return to mainland before the incoming tide, however there is always the chance you may get a little wet!
There are toilets and a cafe on the mainland.
Please Bring: Hat and SPF sunscreen, snacks and plenty of water, shoes that can get sandy and wet, binoculars or a camera with long-range zoom are highly recommended. Download QLD Wader Study Group’s My Shorebird Watcher App. This is a pet-free event.
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the Redland Coast, the Quandamooka Peoples and their Elders. We pay our respect to all First Nations folks in our community, and invite all birders to walk with mindfulness and respect.
