Digital Wellbeing is about making the best use of digital technology and about integrating digital technology into family life in ways that are meaningful and promote individual family values. Meaningful Engagement is about striking a healthy balance of digital technology use in family life. Mitigating the risks and embracing the opportunities aﬀorded by digital technology requires that parents cycle between restrictive and enabling mediation strategies depending on the child, context, parenting style, and family values.

Children today are immersed in technology, and from their earliest explorations of digital spaces, they are exposed to risks. Parents can easily be led to believe that technology is inherently negative and dangerous, yet this could not be further from the truth. Indeed, Professor Andy Phippen encourages parents to “move beyond online safety to better understand how we develop resilience in young people so they can deal with what they see and do online, rather than hoping they avoid it completely.” Despite the potential risks associated with digital technologies, we are simply no longer in a position to argue that denying our children access to them is in their best interest. Whether we like it or not, we are parenting in the digital present and preparing our children for their digital futures.

Meet the Presenter: Robyn Treyvaud

Robyn is a globally recognized expert in online safety and digital wellbeing. She is an educational leader with over 40 years of experience in schools in Australia, including Head of School positions at two schools, and has worked in Asia as an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) workshop leader.

She is the founder of Cyber Safe Kids, an international organisation that assists educators, school and parent communities to understand and meet the challenges of living and working in the digital world.

Robyn has also co-authored a book ‘The Parents’ Survival Guide to Children, Technology and the Internet’. Experts have referred to this book as ‘A must-read for any parent who cares about the wellbeing of their children’ and ‘The best online health and safety book on the market’.

Robyn has advised governments, the media, industry and not for proﬁt organisations, nationally and internationally and most recently was Head of Education at Family Insights Group.
