Koala Citizen Science Training Day in Sutherland Shire

Whether you live in the Sutherland Shire or elsewhere, we welcome you to a day surrounded by lush koala habitat, learning about koala ecology and how to record information about koala sightings, scats and habitat.

We are thrilled to support the Sutherland Community by funding a training day with expert koala ecologists. Filling every seat will ensure the community gets the most out of this valuable opportunity. Given that places are limited, please commit to attending if you book. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, we kindly ask you give us as much notice as possible so we can offer your place to someone else.
This training day is tailored for adults and welcomes participants aged 14 and above. Attendees under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
About SBKN
The Sydney Basin Koala Network (SBKN) has been established by the Total Environment Centre and WIRES to create a collaborative and supportive network for koala advocates across the region. Our overarching aim is to protect and expand connected, thriving Koala core habitats and corridors across the Sydney Basin.
Come along to the Citizen Science Training Day if you’d like to learn about koala ecology and how to record key data about Sydney Basin Koalas that will contribute to their conservation.
CITIZEN SCIENCE TRAINING DAY
When: 23rd March 2024 10 am - 4 pm
Where: Karingal Hall, Heathcote Scout Camp, Heathcote, NSW, 2233
A key part of the SBKN project is to record robust data on koala populations, their habitat and its connections, which will be used to develop stronger conservation efforts. And you can get involved in our Citizen Science Project.
Whether you are a regular koala spotter or have never seen a wild koala before, this training day is a chance to learn from experts and develop the skills to become a Koala Citizen Scientist.
Learn:
- About koala ecology
- To identify koalas and key traits (sex, health status etc),
- To identify koala scats and their age
- To identify koala food tree species
- Where, when and how to report your data so it can be used to help protect koalas
After a morning presentation and learning session with our koala ecology experts, you’ll have a chance to practise the skills you have gained in the afternoon out in the bush (a few mins walk from the venue). We will provide morning tea, please bring a reusable mug for tea and coffee and please bring a packed lunch.
WHAT TO BRING
- Packed Lunch
- Reusable coffee cup and water bottle
- Mobile phone (we will be using an app to record data)
- Sturdy enclosed shoes
- Binoculars (not necessary, but great if you have them)

2. Turn Left onto Boundary Road.
3. Use the entrance to the scout camp at the very end of Boundary Road (opposite 38B Boundary Road, Heathcote)
4. Karingal Hall is the second building on your left.
NOTE: if you come in the main entrance on Freeman Road, follow signs for Karingal Hall to find us.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT INFO
Heathcote Scout Camp is a 10 minute walk from Heathcote Station.
T4 and South Coast Line trains stop at Heathcote Station.
