Koof Ibi & Caroline Davis
Event description
Studio 34 presents an evening with two innovative horn-playing multi-instrumentalists: Philly's own Koof Ibi, and Caroline Davis from NYC.
Koof Ibi is a multi-instrumentalist in the Philadelphia area. On any given day you could find him strolling down Broad Street straight into the Kimmel Center with brass bands like The West Philadelphia Orchestra, sharing the big stage with Japanese Breakfast, or performing in the Philadelphia Museum of Art with poet/musician Moor Mother. Koof effortlessly blends his diverse musical influences into his own distinct style. At his solo shows Koof combines live instruments, loops, and effects pedals to create surprising soundscapes, re-invented covers, and sonic liberation. See more at koofibi.com
Caroline Davis’s drive for playing music comes from a dream to connect, beckoning new vistas among curious listeners. Her musical journey began in Singapore, in a humid climate, hearing sounds underwater that she would recreate by singing to her German shepherd dogs. Her Swedish-British family moved to the US, Atlanta, Georgia, around age 6, where she encountered R&B and gospel music, full of horns that lured her to choose the saxophone 6 years later. Drawing from these early movements, Caroline’s musical expression covers a wide range of styles. As a bandleader, she has released eight albums and has won Downbeat’s Critic’s Poll Alto-Saxophone Rising Star. She has worked with Lee Konitz, John Zorn, Angelica Sanchez, The Femme Jam, Miles Okazaki, Rajna Swaminathan, and Terry Riley. Caroline has been a resident fellow of MacDowell, The Jazz Gallery, The Rockefeller Estate, Mutual Mentorship for Musicians, ICE Ensemble Evolution, and will visit UCross and Civitella in 2025. She is a recipient of Jerome Hill, Chamber Music America, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, The Jazz Gallery, and NYFA fellowships. Her teaching practice centers around gender studies in jazz at The New School) and she has a small private saxophone studio at Manhattan School of Music. Caroline is an active advocate for gender equity (This Is A Movement) and current/formerly incarcerated people (Justice for Keith LaMar, Keys Beats Bars, Creatives Beyond Incarceration).
