Koorie Youth Blackout - Portland
Event description
We would love to invite mob from the South West region to participate in the Koorie Youth Blackout! A "Blackout" is a two day catered event hosted by KYC in different regional areas around Vic. We want this to be a time for young mob, aged 13-28, to come together and speak about their experiences within their community, and to create a safe, brave, and outcome-based space, with the main purpose for this space creating a chance for healing, listening and sharing.
We want young people to come and speak on what successes they are seeing in community, as well as what they feel they may need support in or what they might like to see implemented or improved. As mentioned, it is also a time for young people within the community to connect, learn, celebrate, heal and share our deadly culture. The Blackouts will be a key component of and set up many of the discussions to be had at next year's Koorie Youth Summit!
The Koorie Youth Summit:
The Koorie Youth Summit is the largest gathering in Victoria created for and by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people aged 18-28 years. Since 2014, Koorie Youth Council (KYC) has hosted the event to create a safe space for young mob to gather from around the state to connect with each other, discuss what is important to us, be proud, learn, share and celebrate our culture.
Registration details:
Registrations open on 12th November, 2024 and will close on the 30th November, 2024.

Our Story
Koorie Youth Council (KYC) has a rich history and is the only organisation of its kind in the country. KYC is a dedicated representative organisation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in policy and advocacy.
KYC was first known as the Victorian Indigenous Youth Advisory Council (VIYAC). VIYAC was established in 2003 by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC), a nationally appointed body which operated from 1990-2004. VIYAC was created with the support of the Aboriginal community and Youth Affairs Council of Victoria (YACVic). In 2012, VIYAC became known as the Koorie Youth Council.
Our vision is ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people collectively creating our future'.
