Making Kumori Low Chair
Kumo Low Chair
Kumori Zaisu or (Kumori Low Chair) is a new 4-day educational project designed by Koitoya.
Kumori Zaisu was originally designed by Clare in 2023 during an artist in residency program at Mt Fuji Wood Culture Society, and has been adapted into an educational project.
The basic design includes interesting skills, traditional seat carving, and shaping by curved plane.
"Kumori" in Japanese means cloudy. The zaisu is named Kumori because of the soft cloud like shapes that appear in the seat during the carving process.
We know low chairs are not that popular in western style of living, but it is true that we often asked to make them for commission with Kotatsu (heating) table. The chair can be used for kid's chair.
This project suits beginners to advanced woodworker.
This course in designed for beginners, but the use of Japanese small planes and carving chisels will inspire advanced makers.
The course will use machines heavily. For your safety will be assured by the lecturer and the jigs we use. Also, there will be lots of handworks, plane shaping and chiselling.
You will gain the following from signing up
- Kumori Zaisu, all made by yourself by hand and power tools
- Hands-on experience with carving chisels.
- Hands-on experience with curved Japanese plane.
