🧬 Lab Academy Workshop 3 – PCR & Gel Electrophoresis

This workshop takes you into the world of molecular biology, where we can read and manipulate the code of life. PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) allows scientists to make millions of copies of a specific DNA sequence, while gel electrophoresis lets us separate and visualise those fragments. These techniques are the backbone of everything from medical diagnostics and forensics to genetic engineering and research. You’ll set up your own PCR reactions, run them in a thermal cycler, and then visualise the amplified DNA on a glowing gel.

What you’ll do:

Learn the components of a PCR reaction (DNA template, primers, polymerase, buffer).
Set up and prepare PCR tubes with careful pipetting.
Program and run a PCR thermal cycler.
Prepare and pour an agarose gel for electrophoresis.
Load DNA samples into the gel and run an electric current.
Visualise your DNA bands using a blue-light transilluminator.

PCR reaction setup and cycle programming.
Preparing agarose gels at the correct concentration.
Safe handling of DNA stains and gel equipment.
Loading samples into gel wells with precision.
Interpreting DNA band patterns to assess PCR success.

Outcome:
