Following the success of this year's event, ReadCloudVET is pleased to once again partner with the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research to deliver an engaging, hands-on Professional Learning experience for Secondary School VET teachers.

Hosted within one of Australia's leading medical research facilities, this full-day workshop is designed for teachers delivering MSL30122 Certificate III in Laboratory Skills and MSL20122 Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement.

What can a crime scene teach us about laboratory science?

Designed for teachers delivering VET Laboratory Operations and Laboratory Skills qualifications, this workshop takes you through key stages of a simulated crime scene investigation — from collecting and preparing samples to analysing results and using scientific evidence to help identify or eliminate suspects.

Working in a research laboratory environment, you’ll explore practical techniques including DNA extraction and isolation, PCR preparation, agarose gel preparation and gel electrophoresis. You’ll also apply personal protective equipment (PPE), aseptic techniques and procedures to prevent cross-contamination while handling forensic samples.

What will you do?

During this practical workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to:

Collect and prepare samples: Gather forensic samples and prepare them for laboratory analysis.

Prevent contamination: Apply PPE and appropriate techniques to protect samples and maintain the integrity of results.

Prepare solutions: Prepare PCR master mix solutions for DNA analysis.

Explore molecular techniques: Investigate how DNA samples are processed and analysed using PCR and gel electrophoresis.

Record and interpret results: Examine gel electrophoresis results and consider how laboratory data can help verify or eliminate suspects.

Connect practice to teaching: Identify opportunities to incorporate forensic science scenarios and industry-aligned laboratory activities into your VET program.

Supporting your delivery of VET Laboratory Operations

The workshop offers practical experience relevant to selected units of competency from the MSL Laboratory Operations training package, including sample preparation, working solutions, contamination prevention and data recording.

It provides an opportunity to strengthen your industry knowledge, experience techniques in a professional research setting and gather ideas for engaging, authentic learning experiences for your students.
