It's a commonly heard claim in liquor retail: 'Oh, I used to drink lager, but now I'm all about craft ales'. 'Lager' can become a dirty word after your palate's been seduced by a few sturdy IPA's, early in your craft beer journey, but that's usually the result of vague, slightly embarrassing, memories of drinking too much mass-produced industrial swill - do you need a slice of lemon with that?

Interestingly, though, there comes a point in this flavoursome journey when 'Imperial' fatigue will inevitably set in... Hop-bombs numb the tastebuds; massive stouts feel like a meal; booze does what it does. The BIG end of craft will always be there, but now you find yourself craving beers that offer subtlety, elegance and balance. You've come full circle, but that doesn't mean you should contemplate a return to those bland-by-design, brewed-by-accountants, beverages of yore.
