🌿 Our BioBlitz is back for a fifth year 🔎

Be a part of restoring Lake Pedder through citizen science and connect with other nature lovers.

Location: Southern End of the Pedder Impoundment

Date: Saturday 29th November and Sunday 30th November

Student and family friendly event. No experience necessary - only enthusiasm is required 🙏🏽

Come for a day, or stay for the weekend!

Saturday:

• Bioblitz sessions throughout the day around the shoreline and forests (surveying flora and fauna using iNaturalist app)

• We will have local experts on hand with a wealth of knowledge about all things flora, fauna, photography and the restoration of Pedder.

• Stay Saturday night for night time activities including a film screening of the award winning film Pedder: the fault in Tasmania's wilderness, moonlit surveys, nature journaling, dark-photography workshop and dinner at the Pedder Wilderness Lodge.

Sunday: (Optional)

• Relaxed morning breaky at the Lodge

• Optional bushwalk on Jacks Track or the Needles with Tas Uni Bushwalking Club and open space to run your own activity

The Detailed Plan

Saturday 29th (main Bioblitz extraveganza)

10AM - meet at Huon Campground for a briefing and cuppa

10:30 Bioblitz time - surveying around Scotts Peak shoreline (heathland)

12:30 PM - Lunch at Huon Campground (BYO with cakes, snacks, coffee and tea provided by Restore Pedder)

1:30 PM - Bioblitz time in the gully behind towering dam wall (bushland and forested area)

3 PM - Afternoon Tea and fun chats at Huon Campground

optional expedition to Red Knoll for incredible views and unique subalpine flora

4 PM - Bioblitz survey lake moreland area on the way to Strathgordon

5:30 PM - Convene at Pedder Wilderness Lodge for evening activities (photography, night survey, stargazing and dinner)

7:30 PM - Film Screening of the award winning Pedder: The Fault in Tasmania's Wilderness in the comfy Pedder Wilderness Lodge (complete with beanbags and couches for chillaxing)

From 8:30 PM Dark Sky Workshop & other dark activities

Sunday 30th (all optional: connection, adventure and relaxing time)

8 - 9:30 AM Join us for breaky at Pedder Wilderness Lodge, followed by a bushwalk and the option of running your own activity

Camping available at Huon and Ted’s Beach campgrounds - we recommend staying at Ted's Beach on Saturday night if you want to be involved in the night activities. Or you can book a room at the Pedder Wilderness Lodge!

BioBlitz Q&A

What's provided?

• Fun time in nature while collecting important information needed for our case to restore Lake Pedder by having it selected as a flagship project for Australia's UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration.

• Snacks, cake, tea and coffee provided

What do I need to bring?

• BYO water, food, camping gear, torch, camera (optional), weather appropriate clothes, and phone

• Be sure to download the iNaturalist App before coming along!!

What is a Bioblitz?

A Bioblitz is a fun, community-led biodiversity survey where we work together to record as many species as possible in a set time and place using the iNaturalist field app.

Your observations help build the evidence base for restoring Lake Pedder.

How do get there?

• The Pedder Empowerment is about 2.5 hours away by car.

• Carpooling is recommended. Once you have registered, you are able to organise your carpool through a Whatsapp Chat.

Accommodation Options

Camping at Huon or Teds Beach campgrounds or book accommodation at the Pedder Wilderness Lodge.

Do I need to camp?

Not at all. You’re welcome to join just for the Saturday, we recommend joining camping overnight on Saturday night or you can book comfy accommodation at the Pedder Wilderness Lodge. The core team will be camping at Scotts Peak Dam if you’d like to stay close to the action.

Will anyone camp on Friday night?

Yes. The core team plans to be at camp from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. You can come for as long as suits you — a few hours, just Saturday, or the whole weekend.

What is my ticket fee going towards?

Your registration will help cover snacks, room hire and workshop materials

Why is the Pedder Bioblitz important? What will my survey data contribute towards?

Your data helps Restore Pedder demonstrate the ecological values of the area and supports our case to have Lake Pedder selected as a flagship project for Australia’s UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. The more species we log, the stronger the case.

What experts will I hear from?

You’ll hear from resident ecologist and native orchid expert Graham Green, Geographer Jimmy Cordwell, Dark Sky Expert Joe Bean from the Wilderness Society, campaign coordinators, and other special guests (to be announced) who will share local knowledge, biodiversity insights and restoration updates.
