Lateral Violence Training | Wagga Wagga

Lateral violence is a destructive force. It undermines cultural safety and trust, and increases the isolation of targeted people. People who experience lateral violence have: reduced mental wellbeing, low confidence, low self-esteem, and feelings of isolation.

This training will provide you with a introductory overview of lateral violence, its impacts and how to develop tools to challenge lateral violence.

Lateral violence includes: gossiping, personal put downs, jealousy, bullying, shaming, social exclusion or shunning, family feuding, organisational conflict, and physical violence.

What you can do:

Like all forms of violence, lateral violence can become normalised if not challenged.

Everyone can help ensure it does not occur. It is important to respond quickly because the longer the situation continues, the more difficult it is to address and the harder it becomes to repair relationships. 

This half-day, introductory workshop provides participants with the skills to identify and expose lateral violence within communities/workplaces and learn how to reduce its effects within both personal and professional settings, including:

• define the concept of lateral violence

• identify why lateral violence occurs

• describe the effects and impacts of lateral violence, and 

• develop strategies and tools to challenge lateral violence and its impacts
  

This training is targeted at volunteer coordinators (paid and unpaid roles), community service coordinator and program managers working with/supporting First Nations, refugee, migrant and queer communities.
