Bookshop by Uro celebrates the publication of Corporate Ethics and the Architecture of Asylum by Jennifer Ferng, a Sydney-based academic and architectural historian. The book examines how the multinational contractors responsible for building immigration detention centres are complicit in human rights violations—and proposes that visualising asylum through emerging technologies such as AI can become a tool of resistance to political corruption. Join us for a frank discussion about offshore processing and its damaging effects on Pacific communities and environments.

About the speakers

Jennifer Ferng is Associate Professor in Architecture at the University of Sydney. Her research addresses how environmental and humanitarian histories have impacted contemporary issues related to the climate crisis and the forced displacement of asylum seekers and refugees.

Anoma Pieris is a professor at the Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning and Associate Dean Research. She holds a BSc from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, an MArch and SMArchS from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a PhD from UC Berkeley and an MPhil in geography from the University of Melbourne. She was named a Fellow of the Society of Architectural Historians - USA- in 2023.
