Introducing the Green Water Detective Challenge

What happens to rain after it reaches the ground? How do plants move water? And how do water, soil and vegetation affect local conditions?

Join us for an introduction to the Green Water Detective Challenge, a new four-week learning experience for National Water Week 2026.

The Challenge helps students investigate the water held in soils and vegetation. Through observation and practical activities, they follow water from the ground, through plants and into the atmosphere, before exploring how it moves through the wider landscape.

In this webinar:

• David Maher will introduce the science of green water, landscape water cycling and hydrological cooling.

• Jenny Hiller, Education Lead at the Australian Water Association, will introduce National Water Week and explain how teachers can use the Challenge.

• We will walk through the Teacher Guide and Student Journal, discuss how the activities can be adapted for different students and settings, and answer questions.

The webinar is for teachers, environmental educators and anyone interested in helping young people understand how water connects everything.

The Green Water Detective Challenge is a collaboration between AAEE, the Australian Water Association and Regenerate Earth.
