Launch of The Space Between - Shae Gregg
Description
Join us for the launch of The Space Between presenting paintings and drawings by Shae Gregg exploring identity, memory and belonging
The Space Between presents a compelling collection of paintings and drawings by Sunshine Coast artist Shae Gregg, created between 2023 and 2026. Exploring themes of identity, memory, belonging and human connection, the exhibition invites audiences into a thoughtful visual journey that reflects on the experiences and relationships that shape our lives.
Drawing on personal stories, family histories, photographs and archival materials, Gregg creates richly layered works that move between past and present. Earlier pieces capture moments of nostalgia and self-reflection through figurative imagery, while more recent works delve into family, culture and intergenerational memory, revealing the traces that people and experiences leave behind.
Through expressive mark-making, repetition and evocative imagery, The Space Between encourages visitors to pause, reflect and connect with their own stories of memory and belonging. Both intimate and universal, the exhibition offers a powerful exploration of what we remember, what we inherit and how these threads continue to shape our sense of self.
About the Artist
Shae Gregg is a Sunshine Coast-based interdisciplinary artist working across drawing, painting, installation, performance and sound. A graduate of the Queensland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Art), she has also undertaken an international artist residency at GlogauAIR in Berlin, Germany, expanding her practice through cross-cultural exchange and experimentation.
Gregg’s work explores memory, identity, cultural reconnection and fragmented family histories, with a particular focus on the spaces between presence and absence. Drawing on her personal experience of tracing her Māori ancestry and reconnecting with previously unknown family histories, she investigates how memory, inheritance and lived experience shape our sense of belonging.
Working through expressive and experimental processes, Gregg uses gesture, repetition, layering and erasure to create works that reflect the fragile and evolving nature of memory. In recent years, her practice has expanded beyond drawing and painting to include performance, sound and moving image, exploring the body as both a creative tool and a vessel for memory. Through her work, Gregg invites audiences to consider how we remember, what we inherit and the many ways we connect with stories beyond our own experience.
