The uptake of artificial intelligence (AI) art models, such as DALL-E, has heightened concerns about the appropriation of First Nations art and cultural expression. What are the copyright issues? How do Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Protocols apply? Can AI innovation respect Indigenous artistic tradition? Dr Terri Janke and Shevaun Wright will discuss copyright, Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights and AI generated Indigenous Art.

Your Law Way® Sessions presenters will be:

Dr Terri Janke is a Wuthathi/Yadhaighana and Meriam woman and an international authority on Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP), known for innovating pathways between the non-Indigenous business sector and Indigenous people in business. Terri advises on legal matters including intellectual property, business law, shareholder agreements and governance of Indigenous organisations. She has written leading ICIP Protocols and models for various sectors including the arts, museums, archives, film and business. Terri is a Co-Chief Author of the State of the Environment Report 2021.

Shevaun Wright is a First Nations lawyer and artist. Her areas of specialty include infrastructure projects and legal issues related to the arts. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from UCLA, and has practiced law in both the United States and Australia. She is an accomplished artist, winning the Parliament of New South Wales Aboriginal Art Prize in 2015. Shevaun is actively involved in community projects, exploring the intersection of law and art.
