Libraries and archives hold significant collections of cultural knowledge, and many are committed to making that knowledge discoverable and accessible for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers. However, managing access to Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) materials can raise complex questions about cultural authority, appropriate context, and respectful use.

This one-hour Law Way® Session will explore practical approaches to handling access requests for ICIP materials, and how ICIP Frameworks can support libraries and archives to label, contextualise and manage collections in culturally appropriate ways. The session will consider how cultural notices, metadata labelling, and ongoing community relationships can improve research outcomes and support respectful engagement with Indigenous knowledge.

Our Senior Solicitor, Laura Curtis, will step through:

· The role of libraries and archives in making knowledge accessible

· Common regulatory and legal obligations affecting access decisions

· ICIP Protocols and Frameworks: what they are (and what they are not)

· Approaches to handling access requests from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers

· Approaches to handling access requests from non-Indigenous researchers

· The practical use of ICIP labelling in metadata and cultural notices

· Supporting ongoing relationships, feedback loops, and better research outcomes
