Leadership & Coaching Skills for First Line Supervisors- Troy
Description
Hosted by the Troy Police Department in Troy, Michigan. This course is registered with MCOLES and eligible for use of Law Enforcement Distribution (LED) funds per PA 302 of 1982 and/or Continuing Professional Education (CPE) funds per PA 203 of 1965.
First-line supervisors set the tone for every shift. They shape culture, and they determine whether officers perform at their best or fall short of their potential. Yet most supervisors are promoted based on their skills as officers, not their ability to lead people. Agencies pay for that gap later, in turnover, in grievances, and in officers who never reach their potential because no one taught their supervisor how to develop them.
Leadership and Coaching Skills for First Line Supervisors closes that gap directly. This one-day onsite course gives supervisors a proven coaching model and a clear framework for the first 90 days in rank, built around reality-based principles instead of abstract theory. Supervisors leave with tools they can use on their next shift, not a binder they will forget by Monday.
The course is led by Thomas Gillan, a Certified Law Enforcement Trainer who has developed and delivered training for the Florida Sheriff’s Association, FDLE, the FBI National Academy, and agencies across the country. Gillan built this course around a coaching model any supervisor can apply immediately, along with the leadership lessons of General Colin Powell and a clear success strategy for the critical first 90 days in rank.

Why This Course Delivers
Most supervisory training is packed with theory and light on application. This course flips that model. Every topic is grounded in the realities of law enforcement supervision, delivered in a format that maximizes peer discussion, practical exercises, and immediate takeaways. Participants leave with tools they can apply the next day on the job.

Who Should Attend
Newly promoted and aspiring sergeants, corporals, and shift supervisors, along with lieutenants who are responsible for developing their first-line supervisors. This course is also a fit for corrections supervisors and civilian supervisors who lead sworn or support staff. Agencies that promote on technical skill alone carry real exposure: officers who stall, grievances that could have been prevented, and turnover that traces back to supervision. Sending a supervisor builds the coaching and leadership skills that address those problems before they become costly.
