β€˜Black swans and organisational resilience’

In January 2024, Mark Armstrong was announced as the first ever Chief Officer for the Queensland State Emergency Service (SES) as part of major reforms underway to enhance the delivery of disaster and emergency management in Queensland.
Mr Armstrong has more than 25 years experience in the Australian Defense Force and major multi-national corporations.
In 2022, he commanded the ADF response to the South-East Queensland floods.

Black Swan TheoryΒ refers to those events which are difficult to predict in the normal course of business. They are random, unexpected, but high-impact events. These events are considered outliers, because there is no past data which can point towards its occurrence in the foreseeable future.
Mark will be sharing his experiences in maintaining organisational resilience during Black Swan events that have ultimately led to his appointment as Chief Officer of the QLD SES.
