Leading Psychological Safety - making it safe to speak up

Have you ever been on a team or in an organisation where you were reluctant to speak up? Or engage in behaviours that could negatively influence how others perceive your competence, awareness and positivity? Sure you have, we all have. It could have been simply not feeling comfortable asking what the project goal was for fear you ran the risk of sounding like the only one out of the loop. This self-protection or impression management is a natural strategy in workplaces. However, it is also detrimental to effective teamwork, innovation and inclusion.

Psychological safety is the belief that you will not be punished or humiliated for speaking up with ideas, questions concerns or mistakes [Source: Prof. Amy Edmondson]. Imagine the possibilities in a team or organisation like that.

The absence of psychological safety in teams and organisations manifests in:

A lack of rigour and candour in important conversations and decisions
The inability to collaborate & support colleagues
Diminished innovation through avoidance of risk & failure
Differences being rejected
At worst, making errors & mistakes because people fear speaking up

Studies show that psychological safety allows for moderate risk-taking, speaking your mind, creativity and sticking your neck out without fear of having it cut off – just the types of behaviours that lead to innovation, great teamwork and new ideas.

Fortunately, effective leaders can influence and build a climate of openness where there is a willingness and ability to talk about errors.
