Learn to cycle with confidence
Adult Cycle Skills L1 + 2 (All bike types welcome)

Keen to get back on your bike? Want some tips about how to stay safe when sharing the road and pathways?
Want to brush up your bike handling skills or find out how to navigate in traffic?
Come along to our free course led by supportive, experienced instructors.
This 2 hour course is a great way to get back into biking or to build confidence for riding on the road for the first time.
Level 1 skills are in an off-road car park environment and focus on bike safety, handling, and riding fundamentals.
Level 2 skills are held on quiet roads, and focus on cycle road code requirements, cycling skills at intersections and roundabouts, making good decisions and being predictable.
Course Structure
- How to check and fit a helmet
- Basic bike introduction and check
- Pedal ready, braking, gears, bike control
- Bike handling skills, looking behind and signalling
- Road signs and rules, and their relation to bike riders
- How to ride on a shared path and quiet roads including:
- positioning
- passing side roads and parked cars
- turning left/right into and out of intersections
- travelling straight through an intersection
- route planning
Meet your course facilitator, Buddy Meyer
Buddy Meyer is Adult cycling Educator for Western Bay of Plenty and is part of the Travel safe team at Tauranga Regional Council. He has been involved with cycle skills training for over 3 years. What he loves most about his job is passing on his own love, passion and knowledge for cycling, healthy/active lifestyle and well-being to others. Born in Tauranga, Buddy knows his way around the city and is happy to share with others how to make the most of cycling in this region.
