Event description

Always wanted to dance? Come and join our weekly Salsa classes and learn one of the world’s most popular dances from a professionally trained Cuban dancer and teacher.

Salsa has its music and dance origins in Cuba and our authentic down-to-earth style is inclusive of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Come every Wednesday at 6.30pm and enjoy a fun-filled hour learning the fundamentals of Salsa and Rueda with maestro Vivio, who has trained 1,000s of dance students, and at least a dozen teachers, supported by his senior students.

In Cuba, music and dance is a way of life. In Aotearoa, it's easy to fall in love with Salsa as a way to socialise, have fun, gain a skill, stay healthy and enjoy joyful moments with friends, and strangers. Come and give it a go!

>>>

WHO IS MY TEACHER?

Vivio first learnt his dance from a young age in Guantanamo City, before being selected at aged 11 to learn at the prestigious National School of Arts (ENA) in Havana. After graduation, he worked as a professional dancer for famous Cuban dance companies like Danza Contemporanea de Cuba and Ballet de Camaguey, performing in shows that travelled all over the world, like Lady Salsa, before he settling in Aotearoa in 2002.

Since then, his company The Cuban Groove has taught 1,000s of students and at least a dozen teachers. The Cuban Groove and its' bands Ke lo Ke and Vivio & Friends have performed at events, parties and festivals around the country. Vivio has also judged dance competitions, and appeared on film and television, while keeping his passion for teaching authentic Cuban dances at all levels, supported by his partner Justine and other senior students.

Have some fun and join our regular Salsa social nights, dance workshops and classes at bars, parties and festivals by Liking or Following us on Facebook and Instagram. Ke lo Ke and Vivio & Friends perform beautiful Cuban rhythms that are perfect for dancing, so check them out too at @kelokeband.

WHAT IF I'VE LEARNT SALSA ELSEWHERE OR A LONG TIME AGO?

If you are new to The Cuban Groove, depending on your previous experience, we recommend that you contact us to discuss which level will suit you.

WHAT IF I’M TOO UNCOORDINATED, OR TOO OLD, OR TOO…?

Everyone has a different journey into dance. Diversity is the essence of Cuban Salsa and, at The Cuban Groove, we celebrate the uniqueness of our students who have various dancing abilities. Some start with zero experience while others have trained under experienced teachers for many years. All you need is enthusiasm and commitment and you’ll be dancing in no time. We hope you will join us on this exciting dance adventure together!
