Event description

Bookmaking in Action and...

Learning Design to Engage Young Writers

 – Planning Spotlight Studies (Units of Study)

Facilitated by Lisa Burman

IN MELBOURNE FOR THE FIRST TIME

This is a follow-up workshop for those who have background knowledge and experience in Writing Workshop.
(Ideally, you have participated in one of our Introduction to Bookmaking, Introduction to Writing Workshop or Introduction to Writer's Notebooks Mini Courses/eCourses.)

We can think of making a plan as something rigidly established in advance, with no scope for modification. Or… we can think of a plan  as a proposal or intention that helps set our direction, but is open to revision and enhancement along the way.  When we also think of ourselves as designers of learning opportunities, we take on the role of,“a good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.”

(Charles Eames, American Mid-Century Designer)

Designing a clear plan for our Writing Workshop prepares the learning environment and our thinking for the possibilities, interests and learning intentions of the young writers we work alongside. It can bring clarity to our teaching, connection to young writers' learning and intentionally build a sense of community.  You'll leave this workshop with a sense of direction and a process you can use for every Spotlight Study/Unit of Study.

In this workshop, Lisa will:

  • Introduce the benefits of framing writing teaching & learning within a Spotlight Study (Unit of Study).
  • Introduce the three different types of Studies that are important to offer young writers across a year.
  • Lead you through a process for planning a Spotlight Study, with clear goals and that also brings an inquiry stance into Writing Workshop.
  • Show how to prepare a Stack of mentor texts for each Study.
  • Share a strategy for connecting writing conferences to your Study goals, without losing their responsiveness to the young writer's intentions.
