Description

The Australia Indonesia Youth Association (AIYA), National Australia Indonesia Language Awards (NAILA) and BasaBasa Learning Centre are delighted to invite you to join us for an interactive seminar and workshop on Learning Indonesian Beyond the Classroom: Strategies for Foreign Learners.

This workshop is aimed at:

  • Indonesian language teachers of foreign students

  • Foreign students currently studying Indonesian

  • Anyone interested in acquiring practical strategies to teach Bahasa Indonesia more effectively to foreign students

The workshop will open with a presentation from BasaBasa Learning Centre which will focus on:

  • Comparing active and passive structures in Indonesian and English, with some simple examples

  • Highlighting diverse Indonesian phrases that have no direct English equivalents

  • Exploring levels of politeness and forms of address in Indonesian compared to English

  • Introducing unique idiomatic expressions in advanced Indonesian

  • Discussing cultural context in word choice

This will be followed by a talk show led by BasaBasa Learning Centre Director of Education Nadia Romadhona, who will be interviewing AIYA National President Anastasia Koo and Australia-Indonesia Content Creator Alexandra Lyons. This session will be an opportunity to gain valuable insights from the interviewees as they share their experiences as international students studying and using Indonesian in everyday life.

The final session will be a practical Indonesian-English translation exercise, with participants breaking up into smaller groups of 2-3 people. The workshop will conclude with a networking lunch.

Workshop participants will also have the opportunity to learn more about NAILA, an annual Indonesian language speech competition in Australia, reflections on the key outcomes from the NAILA 2025 Awards and NAILA 2026 volunteer opportunities.

Workshop participants will be emailed a certificate of attendance following successful completion.
