Less Paper, More Composition and Balance: Minimalist Collage with Rocio
Description
Collage looks easy until you have a pile of pretty paper and no idea where to stop. This class fixes that. You will learn how to balance your composition, using a few shapes, one strong image and lots of empty space to say more than a crowded page ever could. No drawing skills. No experience. Just scissors, glue and a willingness to leave things out.
What will we cover?
We start by looking at real examples of balanced, minimalist collage art. Then we get our hands sticky.
How negative space does the heavy lifting
The principles of composition, including balance, scale and weight
Choosing one hero colour or texture and letting it shin
Building rhythm and tension with simple shapes like circles, triangles and bars
Working with a tight palette so everything plays nicely (or clashes on purpose)
Arranging before you glue, and knowing when to stop
You will leave with at least one finished composition to take home. Just add glue.

Who will be teaching?
Rocio Santos (She/her) is a Melbourne collage artist and the founder of Pegados Collage Studio. Originally from Peru, she named her studio after the Spanish word for "glued", which also means "close" or "attached", exactly how she feels about paper. With a graphic design degree and over eight years as a product designer, she brings a designer's eye for composition to a very hands on craft. Her work is made with rescued paper because every scrap deserves a second chance. You can find out more about her work here.
