Event description

Join us in-person at the Morwell Innovation Centre to watch a webinar broadcast from Germany exploring how Saxony, Germany is navigating structural change as coal mining ends.

The session will explore:

  • Data-driven decision-making, AI, and innovation systems in the context of regional transformation.
  • Designing effective growth pathways, considering demographic shifts, industrial diversification, and environmental rehabilitation of former coal sites.
  • Key tools, strategies, and policy interventions to support economic and social transition.

Dr Friedrich Dornbusch, Head of Regional Transformation and Innovation Policy at Fraunhofer ISI Leipzig, will lead the webinar session alongside Dr Benjamin Klement.

In the room at the Morwell Innovation Centre, regional development leader Chris Buckingham will add a local perspective and highlight how these insights apply to Australia, particularly the Latrobe Valley. Joining him will be Professor Thomas Baumgartl, Director of the Future Regions Centre at Federation University. Both Chris and Thomas will be available to answer further questions following the webinar.

Attendees will gain valuable perspectives on decision-making models and innovation ecosystems that can drive successful transitions in coal-dependent regions.
