In Week 2, Monday February 6, the Cultural and Global Connections Committee has organised a variety of activities to celebrate Lunar New Year!

What is the Lunar New Year?

Lunar New Year is a festival that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar. Each Lunar New Year is designated as “the year of“ one of the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac, which animal is supposed to characterise that year and all those born in it. In 2023, we will be celebrating the Year of the Rabbit/Cat.

Lunar New Year is actually celebrated for 15 consecutive days. Celebrations for the Year of the Rabbit/Cat take place from Saturday 21 January to Sunday 5 February 2023. Lunar New Year is a major celebration in many parts of Asia, but its celebration is also spreading in Australia, where a sizable Chinese and Asian population now exists. For many, it is a holiday, full of prayers, offerings, and other acts of devotion.

Kambala's Lunar New Year Festival will feature red pockets, lantern riddle games, lion dance performances, food fairs, and fortune cookies.

How can you get involved?

This year, we choose to mark it by coming together with food from China, Malaysia and Taiwan. For lunch, we are offering:

China (fried yoghurt ice cream), Taiwan (milk tea, fruit tea), Malaysia (curry puffs, chicken rice, spring rolls, prawn crackers, satay chicken skewers)
Students and staff can order one or as many food and/or beverages as they like. Leftover funds will be donated to Women's & Girls' Emergency Centre charity to support women and families escaping domestic violence.
