Let’s Get Theoretical – Moodifying Your Music: Songwriting Theory Sessions

Let’s Get Theoretical is a monthly songwriting program designed to help you understand why songs work, not just how to copy them.

Across monthly sessions, we’ll deep dive into the core building blocks of songwriting, from harmony and story through to melody, wordplay and rhyme. Each session focuses on a specific element, with practical examples and exercises you can apply directly to your own songs.

You can attend individual sessions based on what you want to work on, pick and choose, or follow the full program to build a complete songwriting toolkit from the inside out. The sessions are designed to work both independently and as a connected arc, moving from foundations through to refinement and creative polish.

No formal music training is required. 

Who is this for? 

Originally created for Alumni of the Songwriting for Non-Songwriters Online group program, these sessions are also suitable for existing songwriters and curious music-makers looking to deepen their understanding of how songs are built.

What’s coming up in the series?

Wednesday August 19 | 7:00–8:30pm — Scribbles to Studio
Ben explores a few old scribbles then walks through the process of turning them into studio recorded singles. This session will include info on different ways you can go about recording, and a few tips on what to do before you start paying someone for their time to maximise your investment in yourself.

Wednesday September 16 | 7:00–8:30pm — Painting the Picture with Wordplay
More on Metaphor, Simile and Hyperbole — plus a dive into how Adjectives, Idioms, Intensifiers and Oxymorons can level up your lyric writing.

Wednesday October 21 | NO SESSION as the boss is on holidays

Wednesday November 18 | 7:00–8:30pm — Time to Rhyme
We’ve got the basics — now let’s deep dive into quirkier Rhyming Structures and experiment with them. You may want to have your free MasterWriter trial (or student discount subscription) on hand for this one.

Wednesday December 16 | 7:00–8:30pm — Make Your Song Sing
Deep dive into strong Melody progressions, Hooks and Dynamics.

Wednesday Jan 20 | 7:00–8:30pm — Moodifying Your Music
We’ll dive a little deeper into Keys and Chord Progressions — exploring Minor Chords and Keys, Stepdown Chords, and Breaking the Key.

Wednesday February 17 | 7:00–8:30pm — Finding and Structuring Your Story
A step-by-step deep dive into Theme selection, Braindumping and solidifying the story of the song to inform the its structure.

Wednesday March 17 | 7:00–8:30pm — Building The Bones (with a little circuitry)
Deep dive into playing with different Chord Progressions throughout your Song Structure, followed by Suno experimentation on how to create an instrumental for non-musicians.
