Event description
Welcome to the next edition of the LGBTIQ+ Elders Dance Club Canberra with special guest the fabulous Venus Mantrap!
Venus Mantrap is the androgynous drag construct of artist, Samuel Townsend. The character, whose roots are firmly planted in the world of drag, explores aspects of cabaret, performance-art and comedy, during live shows. In 2015, Mantrap opened for punk band Glitoris, at the launch of their single Disgrace, and was a featured artist at the closing night party of The Public Theatre (Aspen Island Theatre Company) in Civic Square. In 2016 Mantrap produced The Bowie Ball at Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centre and starred in a new one-man-show at Smith's Alternative titled Life, Love and Lip Syncing. Mantrap has performed alongside drag royalty Vanessa Wagner and Melbourne's 80's dance troupe the Real Hot Bitches! During the You Are Here Festival (2016) Mantrap was crowned the ‘Mayor of Canberra’ and performed at the National Gallery of Australia for the David Hockney Prints Party (2018). Mantrap devised an online act during COVID lockdown, Live From the Living-room, and is a regular fixture at Smith’s Alternative, emceeing the annual Cabaret Voltaire.
