Event description

WHISE is pleased to deliver a series of webinars on LGBTQ sexual and reproductive health for practitioners and policymakers in health promotion, healthcare provision and health program design and implementation. The series will provide an enhanced understanding of sexual and reproductive health outcomes of people in the LGBTQ community, with a view to improving access to inclusive and equitable health information and services.

LGBTQ women and gender diverse people experience healthcare barriers in receiving accurate diagnosis and timely treatment for a range of sexual and reproductive health conditions. Sexual and reproductive health promotion information also tends to be heteronormative and cis-gendered, with a focus on contraceptive counselling and fertility or infertility. As a result, women and gender diverse people in the LGBTQ community can experience poorer sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Inclusive care and health promotion, with a focus on body parts and sexual practices rather than binary sex, gender and sexuality identities, can support improved health outcomes.

Join us to learn more about:

  • The social determinants of sexual and reproductive health outcomes of people in the LGBTIQ community
  • The barriers and enablers to sexual and reproductive health promotion information and services for LGBTQ communities
  • How to provide appropriate and inclusive sexual and reproductive health services and/or health promotion information for LGBTQ community members and
  • Key resources and current initiatives addressing LGBTQ sexual health needs.

We are pleased to present:

  • Associate Professor Julie Mooney-Somers and Jacek Anderst, PhD candidate and Research Associate, from the University of Sydney and SWASH, Australia's longest running survey of lesbian, bisexual and queer women's health and wellbeing.
  • Dr Ally Gibson, from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, on trans inclusivity in cervical screening.
  • Rachel Cook, Thorne Harbour Health, on self-collection in cervical screening for LGBTQ women and people with a cervix.

Please note that this webinar is the second in a series and you may wish to register to attend the third via the link below:

At this webinar, we will examine primary prevention, testing and treatment of sexually transmissible infections and blood borne viruses, contraception, and cervical screening in the LGBTQ community.
