Line Up - Brendan Foster Quintet

Line Up spotlights the pioneering and uncompromising music of Lennie Tristano, a pivotal figure in the development of modern jazz. Tristano was known especially for his polymetric, linear improvisations, and for introducing a conceptual, pedagogical framework that contributed to a distinct aesthetic. This aesthetic was represented deeply in his compositions, collaborators, and students, and would continue to inspire new directions in Jazz and Bebop.

This performance offers fresh engagement with Tristano's compositional innovations, arranged for three part harmony with rhythm section. Line Up will feature some of Brisbane's finest improvisers: Brendan Foster (Vibraphone), Harry Ottley (Alto Sax), Lachlan Alexander (Tenor Sax and Clarinet), Chris Evans (Drums), and Benja King (Upright Bass)

Brendan Foster is an Australian vibraphonist, composer, and improviser, whose work spans jazz and improvised music. His two albums of original music, Brendan Foster Quartet and Lineage, have garnered critical attention. This led to significant opportunities, including the reception of the inaugural Lynette Irwin Composition Commission, which allowed him to compose for an 8-piece ensemble at the 2023 Brisbane International Jazz Festival."
