Date: Wednesday, 20 August 2025
Time: 9:00 - 12:30 pm (Environmental Ethics and Genomic Data Governance Workshop)
12:30 - 1:30 pm Lunch
1:30 - 5:00 pm (Disentangling the Privacy Implications of Genomic Information Workshop)
Venue: Room 201A Dean's Boardroom, Edward Ford Building (A27), University of Sydney
Fisher Road Entrance. Enter Level 2 and turn left.
Workshop 1: Environmental Ethics and Genomic Data Governance Workshop (Ainsley Newson, Narcyz Ghinea, and Wendy Xin)
About the workshop: Join this workshop to hear about the work being done within LINEAGE to consider environmental ethics and genomic data governance, as well as to learn about global debates about ethics, the environment genomics and health more broadly. International guest Dr Gabrielle Samuel from King’s College London will join us to discuss her world-leading research in this area, and the LINEAGE team will also present their work to date. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to an agreed set of points for consideration regarding the role of environmental ethics in genomic data governance, which will be submitted to a genetics journal.
Workshop 2: Disentangling the Privacy Implications of Genomic Information Workshop (Chris Gyngell and Gabby Chandler)
About the workshop: Rapid advances in sequencing and data-sharing mean our genomes are collected, stored, and analysed at an unprecedented scale, yet the rules and concepts we use to protect privacy have not kept pace. Too often genomic data are treated as a single, uniformly “sensitive” category, ignoring how different data types, storage formats, and emerging analytic tools create very different privacy risks. This workshop will take a close look at the concept of genomic privacy and its implications of genomic data governance. The session invites participants to test new ideas, challenge assumptions, and help shape a more nuanced framework for genomic privacy.
The Workshop will run in a hybrid format, in-person and via Zoom.
Lunch will be provided. Please indicate any dietary requirements when you register.
