Little Lunch: Writing Strong Women in Fiction
Event description
Not breakfast, not dinner! … women are busy with their own lives, work, family, and recreation … so lunch it is. Fearless Women is hosting a series of lunchtime talks throughout the year. Our little lunches will bring women (and men) together for networking and for inspiration from an interesting and notable female speaker.
Writing strong women in fiction with Kathy McCullagh.
What does it really mean to write a strong woman — and why do these characters resonate so deeply with us as readers and writers? In this thought-provoking event, we’ll dive into the many faces of the strong female character in fiction. From those shaped by adversity to those pushing the boundaries of virtue, we’ll explore whether strength must always be noble, if weakness in others can highlight (or diminish) strength, and how to steer clear of tired tropes and clichés. Do strong women always need to win? Can they be flawed, fierce, funny — even feared?
Joining us as our special guest is acclaimed historical fiction author Catherine McCullagh, whose richly layered female protagonists defy easy categorisation. With a background in military history and a career that spans the Australian Regular Army, editing, and now novel writing, Catherine brings a unique perspective on strength, resilience, and moral complexity. From wartime Paris to alternate histories of occupied London, her books challenge traditional portrayals of women and immerse readers in worlds where power and vulnerability often go hand in hand.
Whether you're a writer, a reader, or just fascinated by the evolution of strong female characters, this event will spark ideas, challenge assumptions, and celebrate the women who fill our pages — and our imaginations.
All proceeds will support Fearless Women’s mission to empower and uplift women in our community.
