We declared and committed, but are we effective?

There are multiple challenges and questions we face in our practices, but the most important of all is: how do we assess if our buildings actually mitigate climate change and biodiversity loss?

In this webinar we will look at an important certification method which claims to be most advanced worldwide – the Living Building Challenge by the International Living Future Institute.

HELEN LOCHHEAD, outgoing National President of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA), will talk about the AIA Climate Action and Sustainability Taskforce (CAST)

LAURA HAMILTON O’HARA, CEO of The Future Living Institute Australia, will introduce principles and certification methods of the Living Building Challenge, an international standard of sustainability encompassing all aspects of a building project. This also includes measuring performance after completion. It is considered by many the most comprehensive assessment tool for the environmental and social impact of a building.

JOE AGIUS, Design Director of Cox Architecture will present and talk about the Sustainable Buildings Research Centre at the University of Wollongong. The Sustainable Buildings Research Centre (SBRC) was designed and built to meet the high Living Building Challenge standard and went through the required 12-month post occupancy evaluation. After successful completion in 2016, the SBRC became the first building in Australia to become certified.

Both Laura and Joe have very detailed knowledge and understanding of the project that they are very keen to share.
