Lo Carmen at Franks Wild Years
Event description
Creative force and internationally acclaimed singer songwriter Lo Carmen has traversed the world with her distinctive genre defying supernatural sounds, recording and performing solo or with her rock’n’roll band The Great Beyond - Cec Condon (Mess Hall) Ken Gormly (Cruel Sea) Sam Worrad (Holy Soul/Kim Salmon).
Over her seven albums, Lo Carmen has proved she has a way with words, confessionary tones pervade her songs; equal parts rolling narratives, romantic rumination and shimmering country soul-folk-blues, classic songcraft and slow burning anthemic psychedelia. Carmen spins gold from playful twists of phrase, and close to the bone observation letting her lyrics and gilded vocals shine among the arrangements.
Her sound was recently described as ‘if Bobbie Gentry had written songs for and fronted the Velvet Underground you’d have some idea of the vibe... stone cold classics’. Mark Mordue (Boy on Fire)
In her newly released memoir Lovers Dreamers Fighters (Harper Collins) Lo weaves her own remarkable story together with compelling portraits of the women who have influenced her life and career: bold creative visionaries, trailblazers, provocateurs, pioneers, feminists and activists such as Renee Geyer, Chrissy Amphlett, Robyn Archer, Sallie-Anne Huckstepp and underground legend Wendy Saddington in a tender, joyous, messy, vibrant and wholly inspiring investigation of creativity, passion, purpose, art and music.
‘A hard won account of the glory, mess and risk of making art. Lo tells her story by telling the stories of all those who’ve lit and tended her flame... And she writes like a river.’ Paul KellyÂ
