Event description

Local History and Geography Club

Welcome to the Southport Local History and Geography Club! Nestled in the cozy common lounge of 'The Engine Room' at Wayfarer's Arcade, our club is a gathering place for enthusiasts of local history, geography, and genealogy. Meetings are held weekly on Wednesdays from 5 PM to 7 PM, where members come together to explore Southport's past through discussions on maps, place names, family histories, archives and more.

Each month, we host a special ticketed event featuring a guest speaker, open to both members and non-members. These events provide unique insights into various aspects of local history and heritage. Membership is £5 per month, with a free option available for those in need, ensuring our club remains accessible to all who share a passion for Southport's history.

For your first visit, please book for free through Humanitix to ensure we have a spot ready for you. This helps us prepare for new faces and provides a welcoming environment for everyone.

Our club is proudly led by Dr. Eric Lybeck, a Senior Lecturer in Sociology, Education, and Civics at The University of Manchester. For more information or to contact us, please email Dr. Lybeck at eric.lybeck@manchester.ac.uk.

Join us at The Engine Room to delve into the fascinating history that shapes Southport. Whether you're a seasoned historian or a curious newcomer, all are welcome to discover and discuss the stories that make our town unique.
