Event description

Join local historian Bruce Howell for an insightful talk about the deeper history of the Sutherland Shire.

The history of the Sutherland Shire is usually thought of as existing in the form of the hand-written records – involving people like John Connell, Patrick Dolan, Thomas Holt (amongst others) and, of course, James Cook. But there is a different kind of history of ‘the Shire’. It is a history recorded in the landscape itself – a deeper history that essentially involves the original inhabitants – the local Aboriginal people.

This presentation touches on some of the things that allow us to look farther back in time than simply the first arrival of the British ships in 1770. It’s a different type of history, based not so much on hand-written accounts, but based on what is ‘written’ in stone.

Free event, booking essential.
