SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities will be the focus goal of this session, with the discussion looking at the Black Lives Matter movement and the implications for Australians at a local level.

We are thrilled that this important discussion will include Australian lawyer and human rights advocate, Nyadol Nyuon.

Born in a refugee camp in Ethiopia and raised in a Kenyan Refugee camp, Nyadol moved to Australia as a refugee when she was 18. Since then, she has completed a Bachelor of Arts and a Juris Doctor and now works as a commercial litigator with Arnold Bloch Leibler.

Nyadol is a vocal advocate for human rights, multiculturalism, the settlement of people with refugee experiences and those seeking asylum. She has worked and volunteered extensively with a range of organisations.

Steven Portericker, Associate Deputy Executive Director at Goddard Riverside

Born and raised in Harlem, New York and raised by a single parent of five children, the odds of success were low. Steven has been a part of the Settlement House community since 2002 and over 13 years of experience at senior level leadership in the not-for-profit sector, and is currently supporting the oversight of all Early Childhood, Youth and Older Adults programming at Goddard Riverside with has an annual operating budget of approximately $12million.

Steven is a high performing, energetic, strategic thinking professional in the field and has greatly impacted an expansion of Youth Services programming at Union Settlement (a Settlement House in East Harlem, NY) when he was the Director of Youth Services and is now works closely with programs to ensue programs needs are met will amplifying their collective voice to influence systemic change. Steven has a masters’ in Human Services Leadership & Management and has been the recipient of several awards most notably the Partnership for After School Education (PASEsetter) award, which is for recognition of being one of the best and brightest of New York City’s youth development professionals in 2009.

Steven is passionate about addressing the plight of young adult males of color and the continued fight for LGBTQ rights.

Kathryn Coff from Nalderun Education Aboriginal Corporation

Kathryn Coff is a proud Yorta Yorta woman living on Jaara Country. She is a respected member of her local Aboriginal community in Castlemaine and currently manages Nalderun Aboriginal Services in the Mount Alexander Shire.

Kathryn coordinates Nalderun Education Aboriginal Corporation which runs programs including the Meeting Place, Koorie Bus Service, Koorie Family Homework Centre, Murnong Mamma’s Indigenous Catering Service, Men’s Business Program, as well as supports schools and other organisations.

Kathryn is also the Indigenous Practitioner in Residence at La Trobe University (Bundoora and Bendigo campuses). She received an Emerging Leader Award from the Indigenous Fellowship for Leadership and is on the board of the Koondee Woonga- nat Toorang, an Aboriginal lead philanthropic fund.

Kathryn believes that when Aboriginal communities are supported by non-Indigenous Australians who have open hearts and minds, amazing things can happen for the whole community and the way forward is together, walking side by side.

From September 2020, the Australian Neighbourhood and Community Houses Association and UNAA Victoria are presenting a series of monthly webinars to explore why and how Neighbourhood Houses and Centres can engage with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Each webinar will explore one SDG in depth and include speakers from Neighbourhood Houses and Centres already working to progress this Goal.
