Location Mastery: Shooting Authentic Images Anywhere - A 2 Day Intensive with OfOliver
Description
A two-day practical workshop on the full process behind creating strong, polished and consistent images for clients, campaigns and personal work.
This is not just a lighting class.
It is a practical walkthrough of everything that needs to happen for a shoot to actually work.
Across two days, Oliver Minnett will guide participants through the full process he uses to create images for clients and his own work, from the brief and preproduction through to location, talent, styling, lighting, direction, shoot flow and final execution.
The focus is practical. We will be building setups, shooting with talent, changing conditions, solving problems, and working through the decisions that need to be made on the day when there is no time to overthink everything.
You will work through a variety of lighting approaches, including available light, continuous light, strobe, bounce, scrims, negative fill and environmental light. The goal is not to memorise one perfect setup, but to understand when to use each tool, how long setups realistically take, how to make lighting decisions quickly, and how to create images that feel intentional without killing the momentum of the shoot.
This workshop is about learning how to keep everything moving.
How do you build a setup quickly? How do you know when the light is good enough? How do you change direction when the styling, talent, weather or location shifts? How do you manage client expectations while still protecting the creative outcome? How do you direct talent without making the set feel awkward? How do you get through the shot list without losing the feeling of the work?
Those are the things this workshop is built around.
Participants will walk away with a clearer understanding of how to approach a complete shoot, not just one isolated image. We will cover the technical side of lighting, but also the production side: the brief, the team, the location, the mood, the talent, the deliverables, the client’s goals and the pressure of making it all work together.
This is the capstone workshop in the series.
The earlier sessions cover working with talent, building your book, shooting campaigns, shaping artificial light and working on location. This workshop brings all of those parts together and turns them into a practical two-day experience.
It is about understanding how to create a complete body of work, not just one lucky frame.
What you’ll work through
Building a complete shoot from the brief
How to take an idea, campaign direction or creative concept and turn it into something you can actually shoot.
Understanding what the images need to do
How to think about the client, the audience, the final use, the deliverables and the visual outcome before the camera comes out.
Managing client expectations
How to understand what a client wants, how to identify what is realistic, and how to keep the shoot moving without letting the brief become a mess.
Working with talent on the day
How to direct clearly, build trust quickly, keep energy in the room and make sure the person in front of the camera understands what you need from them.
Keeping the shoot moving
How to make decisions under pressure, stop obsessing over tiny details, know when a setup is working, and avoid letting the technical side kill the flow.
Using available light properly
How to read the light already in the location and decide whether to use it, shape it, block it, bounce it or build on top of it.
Working with continuous light
How continuous light behaves, when it makes sense, how it helps with direction and motion, and where it can become limiting.
Working with strobe
How to use strobe for control, polish, consistency and power, especially when the environment or available light is not giving you enough.
Choosing the right light shaper
How to think through softboxes, umbrellas, reflectors, scrims, bounce, flags and negative fill based on the mood, subject, skin, clothing and location.
Understanding setup times
How long different lighting approaches realistically take, and how to choose setups that make sense for the time, team and outcome.
Creating multiple looks from one location
How to shift light, framing, styling, pose, background and mood so the shoot has range without feeling random.
Using scrims, bounce and negative fill
How to shape light without always adding more light, and why controlling or subtracting light is often what makes an image feel more refined.
Handling mixed light and colour problems
How to deal with different colour temperatures, environmental contamination and lighting choices that can make files harder to work with later.
Lighting skin, clothing and texture
How light affects skin tone, fabric, swimwear, reflective surfaces, shape and detail.
Balancing technical control with creative flow
How to stay in control without making the shoot feel stiff, overworked or too technical.
Creating a consistent body of images
How to make the final set feel connected across different setups, lighting choices, locations and moments.
Who it’s for
This workshop is for photographers who want to understand what it actually takes to create strong images across a real shoot, not just learn isolated lighting setups.
It is especially useful if you shoot portraits, fashion, swimwear, editorial, lifestyle, artists, campaigns, personal branding, commercial content or people-focused work on location.
You do not need to be a full-time commercial photographer, but you should be comfortable using a camera and ready to think more seriously about lighting, direction and production.
If you have ever struggled to manage the moving parts of a shoot, panicked when the light changed, spent too long setting up, lost momentum on set, or walked away with one good image instead of a complete set, this workshop is for you.
What you’ll walk away with
You will leave with a practical understanding of how to build and manage a complete shoot from start to finish.
You will understand how to choose between available light, continuous light, strobe and light shapers, how to work through setups quickly, how to direct talent, how to manage expectations, and how to keep the shoot moving when things inevitably change.
You will also receive a workbook covering the brief, lighting approaches, setup notes, key decisions and practical takeaways from the two days.
The point is not to make photography more complicated.
It is to give you enough structure, confidence and control to make the work happen properly.
