This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

The Hon George Brandis KC has spent his career in law, politics and diplomacy. After 15 years at the commercial bar in Brisbane, he became a Liberal Senator for Queensland in 2000. He served as a minister in the Howard, Abbott and Turnbull Governments. He was Attorney-General under Prime Ministers Abbott and Turnbull, and Leader of the Government in the Senate in the Turnbull Government. From 2018 to 2022 he was Australia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Since July last year he has been a Professor at the National Security College at the ANU.

George has had a front row seat at a time of political turbulence and social upheaval in the UK unequalled in memory: Brexit, COVID, the energy crisis, and, of course, the endless Tory civil wars. He expects the mood for a change of government will be powerful. Here in Australia the mood for change has already delivered a new government and a new outlook.

What can we learn from the UK experience? What can they learn from ours? Join us for some candid thoughts on politics, populism, monarchy and more as George reflects on these and their implications for Australia and the world in the years ahead.
