Loneliness and the Quest for True Belonging
Event description
What is loneliness and what does it mean to truly belong?
We all want to feel connected, to belong, to be understood, accepted and loved for who we are. So how can we work together to create a culture of connection at home, work, school, communities and organisations.
Imagine a world where everyone feels a sense of connection and belonging.
Loneliness Awareness Week (5 - 11 August 2024) is about shining a spotlight on the universal experience of loneliness, squashing misconceptions about who experiences loneliness and highlighting the role we all play – individuals, communities, workplaces, education, government – in reducing loneliness and creating more opportunities for meaningful social connections.
To address loneliness in Australia, we need every Australian to better understand what loneliness is, so people feel comfortable talking about it, as well as seeking and offering support. We all have a role to play in creating opportunities for meaningful social connections.
Despite being highly prevalent, loneliness isn’t widely understood or spoken about. At an individual level, the cost of loneliness is declining physical, mental and social wellbeing, and in some cases loss of life. Loneliness is a social, economic and health issue, with the ripple effect being felt across communities and society as a whole.
Loneliness isn’t always apparent from the outside. It’s an invisible cloak that eats away at your wellbeing without anyone knowing. That can make it deadly. It’s common and natural to feel lonely at times in life. But when loneliness is experienced for a prolonged period, its impacts are severe with negative effects on physical health, like heart disease and stroke, and mental health, like stress, depression and anxiety.
Everyone is encouraged to get involved to mitigate the adverse effects of loneliness on mental and physical health.
In this interactive workshop, Roy will share valuable insights into fostering genuine connections and equip you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to connect with almost anyone in a short amount of time.
