Los Niños Perdidos (The Lost Children): A Piece in 20 Questions
Event description
“Why did you come to the United States?” That is the first question on the intake questionnaire for undocumented children who cross the border alone.” This is how it begins “The Lost Children- A Piece in 20 Questions” is a documentary theatrical monologue adapted from the Spanish version of “Tell Me How It Ends: an Essay in Forty Questions” (Finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award) by Valeria Luiselli, based on her experiences working as a volunteer translator for migrant children seeking legal representation.
Using this questionnaire that will determine their situation as a common thread, this adaptation of Luiselli's fascinating book brings to the scene an intimate testimony of the reality of migrant children. The adaptation includes interviews with young migrants who are part of the Association Unidad Latina en Acción (ULA), who have courageously shared their experiences as unaccompanied minors traveling to the US.
The piece is performed by Sandra Gumuzzio, directed by Germán Jaramillo based on an adaptation by Linn Cary Mehta.
The performance is presented in Spanish with English subtitles for all audiences to enjoy.
ABOUT SANDRA GUMUZZIO:
Originally from Madrid, (Spain) Sandra moved to New York City in 2015 and is part of the Off-Broadway theater company Repertorio Español NYC. Some of her theater NYC credits include: La Dama Boba, Filomena Marturano: un matrimonio a la caribeña (NY Times Critic’s pick), La casa de Bernarda Alba,La Celestina and the monologue “Los niños perdidos” (ID Studio theater).Sandra made her DC theater debut at GALA Hispanic theaterwith the play “La Valentía”, directed by José Zayas in 2023.
She has also participated in features films: “NY State of mind”,“When everything is gone”, “Mojin:The Ghouls”.
She has received ATI (Best classical theater actress) and LATAawards (Best monologue actress, and Best Outstanding Cast). Education: Réplika Teatro (Madrid), Susan Batson (NYC) and Bachelor of Audiovisual Communication (UCM).
