Event description

About the Lost Skills sessions

REthink Nillumbik is hosting a series of free workshops at the Nillumbik Repair Cafe. At these sessions, you can learn fantastic new skills to use at home, and also help Nillumbik reduce its waste and transition to a circular economy. A circular economy is one that repairs, reuses and repurposes objects rather than throwing them away.

March Lost Skills: Darn holes in fine knitwear and socks

Learn how to repair holes in fine knitwear and socks using traditional darning techniques. This session covers assessing damage, choosing suitable yarns, and creating strong, neat repairs that will hold together across the life of your garment. The session will teach both visible and invisible mending techniques, and discuss ways to stop moths from attacking your favourite woollens.

Mending helps extend the life of your clothing, reduce textile waste, and preserve well-made garments for ongoing use. Attendees are encouraged to bring along an item of clothing to work on during the session and will receive advice and support in repairing it themselves. If you don't have an item to work on, we'll have some practice clothing available.

FREE but bookings are essential.

What to bring

In addition to an item of clothing, you might like to bring along a few things to help with your repair if you have them to hand:

  • a wooden darning mushroom, or a firm orange and a rubber band

  • darning wool that is the same weight as your item, in a matching or contrasting colour

  • a craft lamp or head lamp for good lighting

  • a magnifying lens and/or reading glasses.

When is it?

Saturday 14 March, from 10.30 to 11.30am.

Who is it for?

All Lost Skills sessions are free to attend and open to everyone in Nillumbik. This session is great for anyone wanting to learn a handy new skill, save money by doing their own DIY, or support a circular economy by giving objects a new lease on life.

Additional info
  • The session will be held indoors.

  • We are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible event environment for all attendees. If you have accessibility or inclusion concerns regarding this event, contact us about how we can help.
