Come and celebrate our awa!
Calling our Waimārama whānau and community - we are celebrating our awa, the Waingōngoro, with a fun day of celebration, restoration & education.
Bring the whole family and be part of this event:
tree planting
games for the kids (and big kids who want to join in)
learn about the Matanginui stream and spring (the very one that supplies our community's drinking water)
hike up Matanginui (medium difficulty) for a spectacular view, whilst learning of its history and significance
earn stamps in your Kaitiaki passport & your Love our Awa badge (please bring your lanyard and passport from Love our Awa day #1 if you have it)
hang out with other cool people who love our awa
eat some yummy kai (bbq provided)
Stay for as long or as little as you can.
Parking will be inside Matanginui gate, approx 400m up on the right from 180 Okaihau Road - it is uneven farm land so think about carpooling in a suitable vehicle for the weather / terrain.
Wear sturdy shoes, weather-appropriate layers and bring your water bottle (refills available on site), also gloves and any other hiking aids you might need.
Note the track for the hike is a sheep track and there are steep, high drops from the top of Matanginui - whilst all care is taken to ensure the safety of everyone, participation in this track is at your own risk and may not be suitable for some, All children and youth are to be accompanied by an adult.
We can cater for vegetarian diets, but if you have other dietary requirements, please bring your own kai.
