Event description

'An evening of original music by pianist Lucas Kewell

Tickets are FREE but seating is limited

Lucas Kewell started playing piano when he was ten years old with a once-a-week piano lesson from piano teacher Larissa Kuznetsova at Oratia primary school. He went on to Glen Eden intermediate where they allocated him a xylophone and only discovered he could play piano at the end of his second year! During this time he had an occasional piano lesson at home with harpist Karen Jones, she also plays guitar and came to these lessons and played rhythms that Lucas improvised too. Lucas then went to Avondale College (where he is at present) his music teacher immediately recognised his potential and Lucas was soon playing in the college Big Band and also a jazz combo. Lucas is basically self-taught. He rarely listens to other people’s music, he said he would ‘rather be playing than listening’, however, there are definite hints of Hamasyan and Jarrett and occasionally Bach in his playing. He can read and write music but prefers to perform his own pieces, many of which he has arranged for piano and other instruments

For a 17-year-old, he has a lot to ‘say’ with his music. He has already provided soundtracks to two short films, literally playing live to the edited pictures. He is currently a member of the ‘Toby and the Rest’ jazz quartet and was recently awarded the Bill Hoffmeister trophy for the most outstanding pianist at the National Youth Jazz contest. This special performance at Lewis Eady is where black notes and score are left at the door, a challenge for Lucas and for a new audience, who will hopefully open their minds and their ears to this remarkable young musician in the making. Lucas will be improvising on themes and performing original works which will include his latest composition 'Poor America'. They say that ‘seeing is believing’ well, this will be a chance to hear it as well.
