Event description

Lunch & Learn will continue to be delivered as free sessions throughout 2025 to strengthen the practice skills and confidence of professionals to safely and effectively respond to family violence.

Please join us for our next Lunch and Learn: Strangulation, Sexual Choking, and Brain Injury.
This session will be delivered by Jackie McMillan, Senior Project Officer at It Left No Marks and Women’s Health NSW who will speak to the latest research on non-fatal strangulation (NFS), sexual choking, and their link to acquired brain injury (ABI) in the context of domestic, family, and sexual violence.

This session explores the physiological impacts, warning signs, and the growing normalisation of strangulation and sexual choking, alongside practical considerations for identifying and responding to those affected.

Under the MARAM framework, non-fatal strangulation is recognised as a serious red flag for the risk of homicide in family violence cases. This session equips practitioners with knowledge and insights to better identify risks and respond with confidence.

Following a presentation, participants will have the opportunity engage in a Q&A to unpack how this applies to practice.

Who should attend?

Designed for both specialist and non-specialist family violence practitioners under MARAM, with particular focus on professionals who may want to learn more about navigating family violence risk in their roles.

Please register by Monday 8 September to attend. We look forward to seeing you there!
