M'ap Boulé is a play with songs that tells the story of a child born of immigrants growing up in a country called Australia. It is an expression of art inspired by the Ancestors of Nancy Denis and their stories. With the help of Carl St. Jacques, Anthea Williams, Victoria Falconer, Mick Stuart and Kween G, Nancy shares part of her ongoing story of spirit, belonging and identity.

Wheelchair users

There is a lift in the main foyer of the theatre which provides access between the entrance on Burton Street (Ground floor), the bathrooms and bar (Lower Ground) and the auditorium (Upper Ground). There are six (6) designated wheelchair positions in the auditorium.

The accessible bathroom is on the Lower Ground floor opposite the lift. There is an additional accessible bathroom backstage, next to the dressing rooms. Please see staff if you wish to use this one.

Our Box Office and Bar also have a lowered bench for easy access.

Auditorium Performances

When attending a performance in the auditorium, there are two seating options available to wheelchair users:

Remain in your wheelchair in a designated wheelchair space (row H)
Transfer to a theatre seat (aisle row H). If you are comfortable with a single step, you can also transfer to the aisle of row G.

Occasionally wheelchair users who are able to transfer to a theatre seat, are able to sit in row A (depending on the performance set requirements). Please speak to a Box Office representative if you’d like to transfer to row A for a performance.

NANCY DENIS

Nancy Denis is a Multidisciplinary Artist. She has worked across stage, television and film including roles in Belvoir’s Sami In Paradise directed by Eamon Flack, STC’s Blithe Spirit directed by Paige Rattray and A Raisin In The Sun directed by Wesley Enoch. ABC’s Cleverman, Netflix's 600 Bottles of wine, Tiktok series Krystal Klairvoyant, Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and Truth directed by James Vanderbilt. She has performed in UTP’s Home Country and Right Here festival. Ma’p Boulé is Nancy’s first solo show debuting live Dec 2022. You can also keep up with Nancy on her YouTube channel ‘The Nancy Denis Show’ where she interviews a variety of guests and musical acts. Nancy continues to work and grow within the arts expanding into Visual Arts with an Artist in Residency with Red Rattler theatre in 2023.

KWEEN G

Kween G is both an industry and cultural leader and emerging Afro-Australian Icon. Kween G Kibone started her career with the explosive Hip Hop outfit KillaQueenz. As an artist, MC, community advocate and curator her commitment to her own artistry and to supporting emerging artists is formidable. Kween G is often described as “consciousness-raising”. She is a strong advocate for inclusion, social justice, human rights and women’s representation within the music industry and currently sits on the advisory panel of the Australian Women in Music Awards.

Kween G is an experienced cross-cultural communicator and facilitator. She is in demand to host and contribute to large scale events such as Sydney Festival, Africultures Festival, The Ethics Centre's IQ2 debates, Marrickville Festival, Women's Scream International Poetry Festival.

ANTHEA WILLIAMS

Anthea Williams is an award-winning theatre and film director. She is also a Churchill Fellow and develops both theatre and screen writing.

Anthea was awarded Best Director of a Mainstage Production at the Sydney theatre Awards for Hir (Belvoir). This production won several other awards including Best Mainstage Production. Since Ali Died (Griffin) won Best Cabaret at the Sydney Theatre Awards and Mother’s Ruin: A Cabaret about Gin which Anthea co-wrote and directed has toured Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

Anthea’s other directing credits include Sleeplessness (Carriageworks), The Pink Hammer (The Court Theatre, Aotearoa), The Humans (Mophead and Red Line at the Old Fitz), Flight Paths and Things I Could Never Tell Steven (National Theatre of Parramatta), The Colby Sisters of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, #KillAllMen and Love and Information (NIDA), The Real You (SmackBang), and Quiet (Fontanel – 45 Downstairs).

VICTORIA FALCONER

Victoria Falconer (she/her) is a multi-disciplinary artist of Filipina-English heritage, based on Kaurna land. She works across cabaret, musicals, drag and theatre as a performer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and musical director.

2022 work includes writing and composing The Vali Myers Project (Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Frank Ford Commission winner); creating and hosting Smashed: The Brunch Party (Adelaide Fringe) a femme-fronted drag extravaganza; performing as The Muso in The Boy Who Talked To Dogs (Slingsby/State Theatre SA); and musical direction for a queer reworking of GODSPELL (Hayes Theatre Co.).

Other productions as musical director include LIZZIE The Musical (Sydney Festival), Oklahoma! (Black Swan State Theatre), Once (The Darlinghurst Theatre Company), Courtney Act's Under The Covers (London), and Sasquatch The Opera written by Roddy Bottom of Faith No More (Summerhall, Edinburgh). She has received nominations for a Sydney Theatre Award and a Green Room Award for musical direction, won Best Cabaret at Adelaide Fringe twice (2018/2011), and Spirit of the Fringe with Glittery Clittery (Edinburgh Fringe 2018).

MICK STUART

Mick Stuart is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, instrument maker, performer and actor.

After many years of performing in bands, he found himself in the theatre as part of the Company B production of Casey Bennetto’s “Keating!- The Musical” as lead guitarist, saxophonist and the part of Cheryl Kernot. This ran for two years and following that he toured in such other productions as Eddie Perfect’s “Misanthropology”, Legs On The Wall’s “My Bicycle Loves You”, Ben Walsh And the Orchestra of the Undergrounds adaptation of Shaun Tan’s “The Arrival”, and from 2013 to 2020 he was the band leader and a co-creator of Strut n Fret’s circus shows “Limbo” and its prequel “Limbo Unhinged” which enjoyed sold out seasons throughout the world and Australia.

More recently, he performed in the CAAP production “Perahu-Perahu” at Adelaide’s OzAsia Festival (2021) and Sydney festival (2022) and also released his album “Forest Of Glass” (2021) based on an instrument of his own creation “The Polymba”.
